WOW! EMMA DONOGHUE BOOK TRAILER

The longing & loss are palpable.
"The book comes out in September. Earlier today, the novel prompted Washington Post Book World fiction editor Ron Charles to write: "I probably should stop reading Emma Donoghue's ROOM on the subway. My weeping is scaring the other passengers." - Jason Boog, GalleyCat

HOW TO MAKE A PITCH DECK FOR YOUR BOOK

"It's quite simple: a PowerPoint presentation should have ten slides, last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font smaller than thirty points." -GUY KAWASAKI

WATCH YOUR BOOK BEING PRINTED

NOTED: "Oscar's Art Books in Vancouver says it has sold about 1,500 digitally printed books since it bought a special printer in March. The machine, which cost about $118,000, accesses an online library of titles and then prints, trims and binds paperbacks on demand.
"Of course the fun is being able to watch their book being made," says Oscar's manager Barry Bechta, who says people congregate around the machine to watch books print." - DANA MATIOLI

MY CHARACTER DESIGN 4 FUN OLD SCHOOL TOY WINS AWARD

And I didn't even know about it.
AWARD: TOY DIRECTORY MONTHLY CLASSIC AWARD, 2008
TOY REVIEW: " The Cynthia Jabar version of Woodkins is the cutest yet! This simple toy gives kids immense satisfaction. They can feel like they’re designing beautiful and sometimes complex outfits, but they don’t have to cut, sew or glue a thing. The plastic carrying pouch makes it a perfect travel, toy, too." – Alison Marek

EDUCATION AS OPPORTUNITY BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN

Great call to action by Marian Wright Edelman.
"Sociologist Ray Rist put it powerfully forty years ago: “if one desires this society to retain its present social class configuration and the disproportional access to wealth, power, social and economic mobility, medical care, and the choice of life styles, one should not disturb the methods of education [operating in America].” (emphasis added)
Is that what we really desire for our nation’s and children’s future? Or are we prepared to stand up, speak out, and raise a ruckus until our schools live up to the promise of educating every child? It’s time for every adult to step forward and assume their responsibility of preparing children for the future. The purpose of schools is to educate children. With a majority of children of all races and income groups—and over 80 percent of Black and Hispanic children—behind grade level in reading and math in 4th, 8th, and 12th grade, we are failing."
Maybe we can harness the creative/cognitive surplus Clay Shirky speaks of into something our collective children can benefit from.
Let's try!

AGHHHHHHHHH.... MY FAV PLACE TO SIT IN MAINE

IS THERE A FEMALE FUNDING MODEL?

Stacey Higginbotham writes: "women are underrepresented in venture-backed start-ups, according to data released today by a research firm called CB Insights, and detailed in posts around the web. The report notes that only 8 percent of venture-backed start-ups have female founders, although the regional data shows that Massachusetts for some reason has an amazing 27 percent of its venture-backed start-ups founded by women."
So noted. GO MASSACHUSETTS!
This is why CHANGE THE RATIO is so important!

HERE HE COMES: Clay Shirky: How cognitive surplus will change the world

CREATIVITY IN YOUNG KIDS IS FALLING, SO WHERE IS OUR COGNITIVE SURPLUS?

INTERESTING FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

Clay Shirky: Cognitive Surplus

PFEFFER CHALLENGES SCBWI. "BE INNOVATIVE."

I couldn't agree more.

NOTED:
*ebooks are outselling print hardcovers and trending toward outselling paperbacks

*Using a $10 paperback and an ebook of equal price as examples, he explained that an author represented by an agent receives 80 cents per book in paperback royalties and $1.75 for an ebook edition. When rights are held by the author in partnership with an ebook publisher, the royalties—on the low side—are $3.50.

*digital is an additional option, not a replacement for a printed book

*Device manufacturers are becoming e-publishers with original, exclusive material published just for the Kindle, Nook, and iPad

e-book wisdom from J.C. Hutchins

FROM J.C HUTHCHINS, Author, via E2BU.com:
"Presently, enhanced content is often an afterthought, tacked on at the end of a production process as a blingy differentiator. We are now in an age of storytelling where that model is practically insulting to a reader. These days, there are few good reasons for creators to ignore the potential of integrating resonant multimedia elements into their stories.

From my perspective as an online- and transmedia-savvy creator, "enhanced" content should make a meaningful narrative contribution to the main story."

I think the "blingy differentiator" is a transitional model as publishers scramble to define the E-BOOK.

That's why this is so exciting. Lovers of experimentation are surely thrilled.
Stay tuned for what Clay Shirky describes as the "cognitive surplus" to explode.
