Join me and other artists at the GALLERY DELLA-PIANA for a PICTURE BOOK EXHIBIT

Stuart Murphy travels all over the United States talking to thousands of kids about MATH! Stuart shows kids that they use MATH everyday- to share a pizza, spend their allowance, and even sort socks.
Gallery Della -Piana will host an exhibit featuring illustration from the 63 MATH PACKED books picture books written by Stuart. The Hamilton-Wenham Library will also be sponsoring a talk and presentation about HOW ILLUSTRATORS WORK WITH WORDS, featuring Barbara Elleman, author of VIRGINIA BURTON, AN AMERICAN CLASSIC, editor of Booklinks and Bookviews Magazines, and Stuart-a visual learning specialist, from 1-3 on October 23, 2010. Following the talk, GALLERY DELLA-PIANA will host a gala opening of the show at the gallery from 4-6. COME VISIT AND CHAT WITH STUART & THE ARTISTS.

NEGROPONTE & ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD

More than 1 billion children in the emerging world don't have access to education.
Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder of the MIT MEDIA LAB, started the One Lap-Top Per Child non-profit in 2000 to change that.
Negroponte says:

"in Peru, we have found that as many as 50 percent of the kids, many in remote villages, are teaching their parents how to read and write."

JOHN AGARD & GRACE NICHOLS, A CANDLEWICK ANTHOLOGY REMEMBERED

I've been doing a lot of googling lately to collect digital bits about my books & toys. I came across a post by Sue Fisher, curator of the Eileen Wallace Children's Literature Collection at The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB. The collection has the largest research holdings of children's literature in Atlantic Canada. I was pleased to see NO HICKORY, NO DICKORY, NO DOCK, CARIBBEAN NURSERY RHYMES, included in her compilation. I illustrated this for Candlewick back in 1995, after going to the Caribbean and taking lots n' lots of pictures. (I love my job!) The verse, written and remembered by John Agard & Grace Nichols is a verbal beat box of playfulness.

In her 30 days of poetry "cheat sheet," she also includes some of my favorite books of poetry like: Where The Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein, Alligator Pie by Dennis Lee, and 19 Varities of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East by Naomi Shihab Nye. I got to do some REALLY FUN loose doodling and work with author Leslie Kimmelman and editor Meg Leder at PENGUIN/PERIGEE BOOKS on this.
I LOVE THE NEW BABY AT MY HOUSE,,, MOST OF THE TIME, is a coloring book that invites older siblings to take an active role with "fun, sassy, hands-on, fill-in-the-blank pages and drawing areas."

DOINK ANIMATION APP ON IPAD

Here is a quick sketch of 2 DOINK FRIENDS ENJOYING THE PURPLE. I drew this on my ipad using the DOINK APP. It's just amazing what you can do with this APP that costs only 4.99! I haven't animated it yet but I intend to explore the site. It's a great place for kids to PLAY, DRAW & SHARE what they have done on Facebook or Twitter. Check out DOINK.com!
